Three seasons in the country – what a way to spend the best part of the year in Canada!
After travelling for much of the winter, I’m generally back in Canada by early April. It’s not quite warm yet, but most of the snow is gone and it’s “not-cold” enough to start working on my property and to get out on my mountain bike. There’s always lots to do, but it’s rewarding work because, from year-to-year, you can see the fruits of your labours take shape.
It’s also fascinating to watch the property return to life, and then blossom as the grass grows longer with each passing day, and the skeleton-like oaks and other sun-loving deciduous trees regrow their leaves. Gardens are planted; the ATV’s and dirt bikes come out; the hot tub is opened. Suddenly, everything is green.
The summer is maintenance, with trail-building and other projects thrown in to keep things interesting. There’s lots of riding, golf, bonfires and sunsets, visits with friends and family, and occasional summer trips to the mountains or the ocean, and to the city when I need a big-city fix. When I do need it, it’s only an hour away.
And then, just like that it seems, it’s September. The nights get colder, the trees begin their months-long symphony of colour, the fall projects begin, and I start planning another winter of travel and adventure abroad.
I’m usually gone by November, but the country’s never far from my mind. Because, no matter where I am in the world, those three amazing seasons are always just around the corner.
