During my life before retirement, I traveled often for both business and pleasure. Business travel took me to major cities in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Europe and, less frequently, Asia, Australia and South America: New York, London, Brussels, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and Tokyo, among other destinations. It was amazing.
When traveling for pleasure, which usually included outdoor activities, I went to places that I was drawn to because of the places themselves. Not necessarily to their cities (or bars, hotels or restaurants), but the truly unique things these places had to offer, such as unique geography, natural beauty or the feelings they inspired. It’s this approach to travel that has also been a focus of my life in retirement.
I’ve also prioritizied my retirement travels to reflect my age and physical abilities, and a recognition that I’m not getting any younger. While I was lucky to have been able to retire in my fifties, I can hear the clock ticking. I doubt I’ll be able to ride the trails of Moab or Rotorua, drive the U.S. from coast-to-coast-to-coast, or travel to extreme, remote locations when I’m in my late seventies. But the steak frites and good Bordeaux at a Paris bistro will taste just as good then as they do today.
So, for now, my travel destinations include the places that I likely won’t be able to get to in another ten or fifteen years, but from which I’ll bring back truly unique memories – and some pretty cool photos and video – of experiences that will last the rest of my life.
